Cornwall,
New York is located at the foot of Storm King Mountain
in the beautiful and scenic Hudson Valley.
The
creation of this site was made possible by the collective
efforts of teachers and administrators at Cornwall Elementary
School (Lee Road). Additional support was provided through
the Cornwall Central School District, Community resources
and a grant from the New York State Archives Local Government
Records Management Improvement Fund.
By providing students with access to local historical
documents and records, students will research, learn
and ultimately better understand their communities'
history and its relationship to curriculum and the New
York State Learning Standards.
Conveniently
located 50 miles north of New York City, and just 5
miles north of the United States Military Academy at
West Point, NY, in scenic Eastern Orange County, Cornwall
is situated in the valley formed by Schunemunk Mountain
and the Hudson Highland ridges along the Hudson River.
In
1609, the English navigator Henry Hudson, thinking he
was in a straight leading to the Pacific, sailed up
the Hudson and, reaching shallow water, anchored off
what is now Cornwall, recording in his ship's log: "This
is a pleasant place to build a towne on."
